About this audiobook
Allan Quatermain joins Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good in searching for Sir Henry's missing brother George, who vanished while pursuing the legendary mines of King Solomon. Guided by an old Portuguese map and accompanied by Umbopa, they cross a deadly desert and mountains into Kukuanaland, a fictional kingdom cut off from the outside world. Umbopa reveals that he is Ignosi, son of the murdered former king and rightful challenger to the one-eyed usurper Twala. Twala rules with his ancient adviser Gagool through fear and ritual accusations. With the general Infadoos and many Kukuanas, Ignosi begins a rebellion. After a costly battle, Sir Henry defeats Twala, but the victory belongs politically to Ignosi, who must govern his own people. Gagool leads Quatermain, Sir Henry, and Good to a diamond chamber, where she kills the courageous Foulata and triggers a stone door that traps the explorers with the treasure. They narrowly escape with only a few diamonds. On the return journey they find George alive but injured, and Ignosi promises friendship while making clear that his kingdom is not theirs to claim.
Why it's worth a listen
Hunter Allan Quatermain agrees to cross an unmapped desert in search of a missing man and the legendary diamond chamber marked on an old map. The expedition's quiet servant Umbopa soon reveals himself as Ignosi, the exiled heir to the kingdom they enter, turning a treasure hunt into a struggle over home and rule. The adventure remains thrilling while asking a question its Victorian frame often avoided: when outsiders enter another people's struggle, where does help end and entitlement begin?
