Match-Day Maths for Year 4: Fast mental maths, times tables, and strategy through sport. ## Introduction Evan, this first training session is for a strong mathematician who also loves sport. You are not starting from zero. You are building speed, accuracy, and tactical calm. ## Warm-Up: The Scoreboard Brain Imagine a scoreboard at the start of a match. Nothing has happened yet, but a good player is already awake. He knows the time, the score, the space on the pitch, and the next pass. Mental maths is the same. You do not wait for the question to push you around. You look for structure. A Year 4 mathematician needs a scoreboard brain. When you hear twenty four plus thirty six, you can see the tens and ones: twenty plus thirty is fifty, four plus six is ten, and fifty plus ten is sixty. When you hear ninety two minus forty eight, you can count up from forty eight: two to fifty, forty to ninety, two to ninety two. That is forty four. The clever move is not always the written column. Sometimes it is the route with the least traffic. In sport, speed without control is messy. In maths, rushing without a plan causes slips. Your warm-up habit is simple: before answering, ask, what kind of number is this? Is it close to a ten? Can I double it? Can I split it? Can I use a fact I already know? A great answer is not just fast. It is fast because it is well chosen. ## Times Tables Are Team Patterns Times tables are not a punishment. They are team patterns. If seven players each do four shuttle runs, the total is seven groups of four: twenty eight. If four players each score seven points, it is still twenty eight. Multiplication lets you change the view without changing the total. The strongest Year 4 move is to connect facts. If you know six times eight is forty eight, then twelve times eight is double forty eight, which is ninety six. If you know nine times six is fifty four, then ninety times six is five hundred and forty. Place value stretches a fact without breaking it. Division is the reverse pass. If thirty six training cones are shared between four teams, each team gets nine because four times nine is thirty six. When a question says shared equally, groups of, each, per, rows, columns, packs, or teams, your multiplication and division brain should wake up. Try this while listening: eight teams have six bibs each. That is forty eight bibs. If two more teams join, you need twelve more, so sixty bibs. You did not count one by one. You saw the match pattern. ## The Substitution Trick Good coaches make substitutions at the right moment. Mathematicians do the same with numbers. If a calculation looks awkward, substitute a friendlier number, then repair the change. For forty nine plus twenty seven, use fifty plus twenty seven, which is seventy seven, then take away one. The answer is seventy six. For two hundred minus ninety eight, use two hundred minus one hundred, which is one hundred, then add back two because you took away too much. The answer is one hundred and two. This is not cheating. It is tactical thinking. In a football match, a player might curve a run to make the pass easier. In maths, you curve the numbers to make the thinking cleaner. The repair step matters. If you add one to make forty nine into fifty, you must subtract one at the end. If you subtract two extra, you add two back. Always know what you changed. A sharp mathematician keeps the original question in sight, just like a midfielder keeps the whole pitch in sight. ## Word Problems Are Match Reports A word problem is a match report. Some details matter; some are atmosphere. Your job is to find the action. Suppose a basketball team practises for forty five minutes on Monday, thirty five minutes on Wednesday, and fifty minutes on Friday. How many minutes did they practise altogether? The action word is altogether. That usually means addition. Forty five plus thirty five…
