Bassanio hopes to court the wealthy and intelligent Portia but lacks money. His devoted friend Antonio borrows three thousand ducats from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender whom Antonio has publicly insulted and spat upon. Because Antonio's fortune is tied up at sea, Shylock proposes a seemingly playful bond: if the loan is not repaid, he may take a pound of Antonio's flesh. At Belmont, Portia must obey her dead father's test in which suitors choose among gold, silver, and lead caskets; Bassanio chooses lead and wins her hand. Shylock's daughter Jessica elopes with the Christian Lorenzo, taking money and jewels, compounding her father's grief and rage. Reports say Antonio's ships are lost. In court Shylock insists on the bond, refusing money and appeals to mercy. Portia arrives disguised as a learned lawyer. She finds that the contract permits flesh but not blood, then turns Venetian law against Shylock as an alien accused of threatening a citizen. His life is spared, but his property is divided and he is forced to convert to Christianity. Antonio's ships unexpectedly return, and the couples reunite at Belmont after a comic dispute over rings. Yet Shylock is absent, and the ending's music cannot silence what Venice has done to him.
Why it's worth a listen
A glittering courtship puzzle at Belmont runs beside a dangerous bond in Venice. Portia asks what mercy means; Shylock asks whether a Jewish man shares the same human body and feelings as his Christian neighbors. The play is brilliant, troubling, and still urgent because its courtroom victory exposes a harder failure: people who speak beautifully about mercy may refuse to practice it.
