After a shipwreck on the coast of Illyria, Viola believes her twin brother Sebastian has drowned. Alone and unable to move safely through a strange country as herself, she dresses as a young man, calls herself Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino. Viola quietly falls in love with Orsino, who sends Cesario to plead his love to the mourning Countess Olivia — only for Olivia to fall in love with Cesario. Meanwhile Olivia's household creates another deception: Maria, Sir Toby, and their friends forge a letter convincing the proud steward Malvolio that Olivia loves him and wants him smiling in yellow, cross-gartered stockings. Sebastian, very much alive, reaches Illyria with his devoted rescuer Antonio. Encounters meant for one twin land on the other until Olivia marries Sebastian thinking him Cesario, Antonio mistakes Viola for the brother he saved, and the twins finally stand face to face. Viola can speak her own name again; Orsino understands whom he has come to love; and the comedy ends in marriages, music, and one deservedly uneasy question about when a joke becomes cruelty.
