Duke Frederick has usurped and banished his brother, Duke Senior, but allows Senior's daughter Rosalind to remain with her beloved cousin Celia. When Frederick suddenly banishes Rosalind too, Celia refuses to abandon her. For safety they flee with the clown Touchstone: Rosalind dresses as a young man called Ganymede, and Celia becomes his sister Aliena. The wrestler Orlando also escapes to Arden after his elder brother Oliver plots against him. Orlando hangs poems to Rosalind on trees. Meeting him in disguise, Rosalind offers to cure his lovesickness by having him court Ganymede as though Ganymede were Rosalind. Their playful lessons let her test his constancy and let both explore love outside ordinary roles. The shepherdess Phoebe falls for Ganymede while rejecting faithful Silvius. Oliver enters the forest, Orlando saves him from danger, and the brothers reconcile; Oliver and Celia fall in love. Rosalind finally arranges four marriages, returns in her own name, and reunites with her father. News arrives that Frederick has abandoned his invasion and restored Duke Senior, while Jaques chooses contemplation over celebration.
Why it's worth a listen
Rosalind enters the Forest of Arden disguised as a young man and discovers that freedom can begin as performance. Around her, exiles build community, brothers reconsider old hatreds, shepherds debate love, and melancholy Jaques declares that all the world's a stage. The result is Shakespeare's most spacious comedy: a story about identity, chosen family, and becoming honest through play.
