What the completed episode actually found
The 2026 randomized trial included 112 sedentary Chinese women aged 18–30 with poor sleep health. For eight weeks, participants received laboratory-supervised high-intensity circuit training, a structured sleep-health program, both programs together, or no intervention beyond their usual lifestyle.
The “sleep program” was a supported service
It included individual counseling, trained research staff, seven weekly follow-ups, workshops and information drawn from a smartphone CBT-I app. The exercise arm trained in a laboratory three times per week.
This was not a stand-alone app trial.
The combined arm improved continuity measures
- Sleep efficiency improved by an additional 2.75 percentage points versus sleep support alone.
- Wake after sleep onset fell by an additional 14.51 minutes versus exercise alone and 16.26 minutes versus sleep support alone.
- The combined program did not show a significant total-sleep-time advantage over the single programs.
The distinction is the value: a person can spend less time awake during the night without logging more total sleep. “Sleep improved” is therefore incomplete until the outcome is named.
